Below are just a small selection of the vast number of places to visit & things to do in our local area, & all within easy reach of our perfect holiday cottage in the heart of Dorset’s countryside.
The world famous Jurassic Coast, Dorset Gap, Gold Hill & Glastonbury Tor each with their own magnificent views are within easy driving distance. Many National Trust historic houses & ancient historic sites are within easy reach for day trips out including Stourhead with its famous early 18th-century English landscaped gardens, &, of course, the ancient monuments of Stonehenge & Avebury Stone Circle.
The towns of Bournemouth (with it’s award winning beaches), Christchurch, Dorchester, Poole, Shaftesbury, Salisbury and Weymouth are all within a 25 mile radius. The Georgian town of Blandford Forum is nearby (13 miles) & a bit further afield is Bath with its Roman bathhouse and Georgian architecture, they are all well worth a visit.
The caves at Cheddar Gorge are most impressive & children love it there.
Weymouth is a fine resort for fishing, sailing, swimming and sunbathing.
Dorchester’s (16 Miles) attractions include the Tutankhamun Exhibition, Terracotta Warriors, Dinosaur & even Teddy Bear museums. For sight seeing try Maiden Castle, Maumbury Rings, Roman Town House, Borough Gardens & the annual French Market at August Bank Holiday.
For those interested in ancient history or archaeology, we are just a few miles from our local Rawlesbury Camp (a 5 acre Iron Age hill fort) on top of Bulbarrow Hill with fabulous panoramic views & lovely Bluebell Woods nearby. There are a number of other Hill Forts in the surrounding areas including Badbury Rings, Okeford Hill, Hod Hill & Hambledon Hill.
Fun & adventure is available close by our cottage, younger children will enjoy Coolplay indoor adventure playground
For older children there is Henley Hillbillies activity centre (open all year round) where you can ride a Quad bike, fly a miniature Hovercraft, drive a Mini Maverick (Mini car), try clay pigeon shooting, archery, fire a crossbow or air rifle – both centres just 4 miles away.
The centre also has a Badger Watch area where families of all ages can enjoy watching these & other creatures in the evening.
